The Arts Education Practice and Research (AEPR) Special Interest Group which is part of the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) organization have been working very hard to raise the profile of the arts and arts education in Australia. The AEPR SIG welcomes all arts forms and conducts a range of activities both within and across disciplines. The AEPR SIG is convened by Dr Kim Snepvangers and Dr Sue Davis.
The events and programs at this year’s AARE Conference which was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) included:
· Creative Education Summit – Sunday 27 November 2016 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).
This year the AEPR SIG were successful in their application for SIG competitive funding which was used to support the involvement of international speakers at a Creative Education Summit. This event was fully subscribed and further video of the event will be available later in the year (https://www.facebook.com/AEPR.SIG/)
Notable national and international attendees included:
* Prof Pamela Burnard, Professor of Arts, Creativities and Education at Cambridge University
* Prof Pat Thomson, Convenor of the Centre for Research in Arts, Creativity and Literacy (CRACL) at University of Nottingham
* A/Prof Anne Harris, DECRA Fellow, Monash University who is winding up her 3-year study into creativity in education.
The AEPR SIG Convenors were very appreciative of a letter written to the AARE Committee congratulating them on their efforts in relation to the AEPR SIG:
During the unforgettable week of the amazing and memorable AARE 2016 conference I attended many Arts Education, Practice and Research SIG presentations, networking events, meetings and social gatherings. I was struck by the SIG’s provision of outstanding presentations, its collegiality, creative team spirit and practice innovations celebrated by this SIG community. The incredibly hard-working and passionate SIG co-convenors, Dr. Susan Davis and Dr. Kim Snepvanger, demonstrated untiring service and dedication to their SIG. They nurtured an engaging and creative community. This was evidenced in their thoughtful, inclusive and unstinting collegiality and mentorship of educators, early career academic peers and doctoral research students from within the academy, across school sectors and the creative and cultural industries.
· AARE SIG Strand and events: There was an extensive program of papers and symposia this year with strong support for all the sessions for the AEPR SIG through the SIG MEETING and SIG NETWORKING EVENT where members celebrated a range of publications and news.
1. UNSW PhD Scientia Scholarship Scheme
Please stay tuned for further opportunities available for PhD scholarships with UNSW Australia: Art & Design. As two of the selected supervisors, Dr Kim Snepvangers and Associate Professor Arianne Rourke have already offered a targeted project titled: Social Data Visualisation: Deconstructing Digital Ethics and Post Human Identity Formation, as an identified supervisory team. The scheme is targeting PhD candidates with publications, together with some research and industry experience. Awardees will receive a $40,000 p.a. stipend plus a travel and development support package of up to $10,000 per annum. International students receive a tuition fee scholarship in addition to the stipend. Target research areas are selected by Faculties, and a cohort of high performing supervisors have been chosen.
