In his opening speech the President of the 40th UNESCO GC, Ambassador Altay Cengizer expressed his concern about the abandonment in many educational systems of a teaching of the social sciences and humanities, essential to the development of critical mind.

Before giving the floor to young people at the second session "(Re)Generation: Rethinking multilateralism with young change-makers" Audrey Azoulay Director-General of UNESCO, stressed the importance of education as a keystone of peace and that of the Agenda 2030. Here are some striking numbers:
- 750 millions of adults are illeterate in the world with two-thirds of whom are women.
- 1 child out of 6 is not at school
- 39 billion dollars in annual investment dedicated to education misses, two-thirds of which are needed for Africa.
