The (Biannual [alternate years to Doctoral Awards]) AERAtE award will recognise an outstanding contribution to research in art education with no restrictions on language. The field of research in art education is rich and diverse and so the term ‘Art Education’ should be interpreted broadly to include, for example, formal and informal1 sectors, but must be predominantly visual arts including multimedia and practice-based approaches to education through art. In addition, the research should foreground the potential of education through art, approaches and thinking to scholarly enquiry. This award will recognize research that is innovative or exemplary in its conceptual and methodological application, that adds to the literature and our understanding of the potential of art education.
An InSEA member wishing to be considered for the InSEA Award for Excellence in Research in Education Through Art must be an active InSEA member. The quality of work submitted will be evaluated according to the extent to which the research demonstrates excellence in art-infused enquiry and how it advances our knowledge about education through art. A further dimension will be the extent to which the research advances systematic enquiry for the wider community of InSEA art educators. This award is available to all active InSEA members at every educational level, a single researcher, or a group collaborative are invited to participate.
Nominations and supporting materials must be submitted to the InSEA Research and Praxis Board electronically. Materials and any inquiries should be sent to Steve Willis, Chair of the Research and Praxis Board at stevewillis[at]missouristate.edu.
Nomination materials should be in English and include the following:
1. Name(s) and affiliation(s) of the applicant(s)
2. Dates of the study (start - end)
3. Name of funding body / Council (if applicable)
4. An application statement/summary of the study including the abstract and keywords that outline the unique contribution the study makes to research and education through art. The application should describe the research concisely, which may include visual, audio, or multimedia material. However, the written application narrative should be no less than 2,000 and no more than 3,000 words or the equivalent. For example, the committee welcomes alternative methods of presenting the information through video or visual presentations. The applicant(s)’ statement should include a section on the contribution of knowledge to the profession with evidence of the impact of the research.
5. Appendices (if included) should be applicable and specific to the research, such as artwork or multimedia material.
6. The application may include links to websites, articles, web documentaries, exhibitions, or blogs that might be helpful for the Board to reach a decision.
7. Applicant(s)’ CV – a maximum of five pages (each).
The Research and Praxis Board consists of one Vice-President (Chair) and InSEA World Councilors representing the six different InSEA regions who will evaluate the submissions and make a recommendation. Decisions will be finalized by members of the InSEA World Council. The award decision will be announced at the Regional Congress in the intervening year between World Congresses. The receipt will be announced in the InSEA News.
